Although Amber advised otherwise, I am still dating my ladyfriend - who will henceforth be referred to as "Deb," since that is her name. Over the past two weeks, many of my friends have met the face behind the brief stories. Karah and Kevin, my softball team, and my high school crowd were all introduced to Deb, and, not surprisingly, she received very good reviews. That sentence probably sounds a little more demeaning than intended, but first encounters often carry the feeling/worry of "go ahead and judge me." You always want your friends to like your girlfriends or other friends, right? It doesn't always work out in one's favor and sometimes you just need to say "so be it" and move on.
But, ideally, people will come up to me and say, "I really like Deb!" And then I smile and nod. That's happened quite a bit lately, so I'm pretty pleased on that front.
That being said, Deb has yet to encounter a number of influential people in my life (such as my mom, Chelsea, and some of the voices in my head), and I have yet to really meet anyone outside of her sister. Who knows, maybe they'll dislike me, right? I mean, I know that sounds implausible, but some people have not enjoyed my company in the past...so it's possible. I'm much like the Desert Grassland whiptail lizard in that way.

Lazy
The lack of posts may suggest that nothing interesting is going on in my life. Not true, I say. I've simply been lazy about writing it all down here. In the interest of my laziness, here's a brief overview of my recent life:
1) I'm going to be an uncle. My sister-in-law is three months along, as of Wednesday. I'm not supposed to know about this yet. And I'm not supposed to tell anyone. Shhhh!
2) My sister in Chicago is in love. This isn't new news, but my mom recently met the guy and talks about the besotted couple every time we're on the phone. I'll be shocked if my sister isn't married - or at least engaged - by the end of the calendar year. Knock on wood.
As an aside, the origin of the word "news" once came up in a holiday Trivial Pursuit battle. The three Men vs. the three Women. The more obvious (and correct) answer is that news is essentially the plural of new. Thus, news is a group of things/items/stories that are new. However, before we ever came up with that answer, my dad deduced that news was an acronym for North, East, West, South - thus a newspaper would be a collect of items from all directions. We thought the answer quite clever and went with it. We were wrong. But I digress...
3) I've also met a lady friend. Unfortunately for you, that's all I'm going to say on that subject. It's going well at the moment, and I don't want to jinx it.
4) After about three months of what felt like walking through sludge, my mother and I signed off on some big financial stuff on Tuesday. It felt good to finally take a big step in the right direction.
Those are the good things...the bad?
5) Word around the office is that a round of layoffs is coming on Friday. As in two days from now. Do I think I'll be on the list? No, but I'm still nervous and it's still a bad sign.
6) In conjunction with #4, it's become more and more apparent over the past couple weeks that my mom and I were given an unwise piece of financial advice. Given my lack of knowledge in investment products, I feel a little odd making such a statement, but every person we checked with strongly urged us not to invest in the advised product. We were smart enough to do our due diligence (an overused phrase, by the way) and seek outside council. The bad part is that the advice came from a man who has known my dad and family for 30-some years. I want to believe he really is just looking out for our best interest. I want to believe he isn't just trying to sell us his product. I want to believe he didn't actually use some underhanded, sleazy tactics to try and persuade my mom and I to invest in his product - but he did. And that fucking sucks...pardon my language. My dad would be openly furious, and it often took a lot for that man to show such emotion.
That's all I have at the moment...

Never Fails
Sometimes my life calls for salsa. Like tonight, for instance. I wanted some black bean salsa. So, I picked some up on my way back from the gym. Unfortunately I failed to recall Ted's Immutable Law of Going Anyway After Working Out. I'm still figuring out the title, but it basically states:
When Ted is sweaty, tired, wan, and wearing mismatched workout clothes and he enters any sort of establishment - be it grocery store, restaurant, gas station, or bar - he will run into at least one very good looking woman. This will result in (1) Ted wishing he hadn't been sweaty, tired, and wearing mismatched workout clothes and (2) Ted wondering where these women are when he is clean and looking more dapper.

Girls, Girls, Girls
We're roughly six weeks into the calendar year, and it's already been a rough one on the female front. On Sunday, Chelsea said she was "practically my girlfriend," and that's easily been the high point of my dating life this year. How sad is that? Chelsea is happily married to my friend Matt.
Earlier this year, I ended my relationship with a woman I'd been dating for a few months. That entire tale may be better recounted at another time, but the bottom line is that I wasn't able/ready to emotionally invest myself in her following my father's death. That may still be the case moving forward, although I think it may be different with a woman I meet in the future. I'm not sure why I feel that will be the case. I just do.
Anyway, since that time, I've broken a couple old rules. First, I asked out a waitress. I promised a friend (who used to be a server) never to do that. To my defense, I've known the woman for a couple years. It's not like I was at this restaurant for the first time and hit on an anonymous waitress. She said yes...only to text message later, cancel the date, ignore me for a few weeks, and eventually apologize and say she was still getting over an ex. Didn't know about that at the time.
Second, I hit on a bartender. Remember my friend I made the server promise to? She was also a bartender. Same promise. I promised to break this promise and ask out the bartender. She was extremely good-looking, funny, kept coming back to talk to me, introduced herself to me, etc., etc. Oh, yeah, then I found out she is married. Dammit.
I have another tale or two to tell, but I'll stop there for the moment. I'm not ready to get into the fact that my mom is trying to set me up on a blind date. And that my sister has suddenly jumped on that bandwagon. Sigh.
